NextGen Gaming is an iGaming developer that was founded back in 1999 and has been steadily making an impact on the industry ever since. It began in Australia, the home of developers like Aristocrat, but its games can now be played all over the world.

Although NextGen Gaming is rarely mentioned in the same breath as iGaming behemoths like Microgaming, it has a wide range of titles in its ever-expanding roster. In fact, you have probably played a few of these yourself.

Who are NextGen Gaming?

As a relatively small development studio, NextGen Gaming has been the subject of several takeovers and has been associated with multiple different brands over the years.

Initially, it was based in Sydney, Australia, where it was also founded. In 2012, NextGen Gaming was acquired by the Nyx Gaming Group, at which point it moved its headquarters to London. Nyx is a massive gaming group whose reach extends into 8 different countries, with a main base in Las Vegas.

In 2018, Nyx itself was acquired by Scientific Games (SG).

This developer continues to operate under the NextGen Gaming name, creating games that are then produced by Scientific Games. If the SG brand isn’t familiar to you, its creations and its subsidiaries most certainly will be.

Not only does SG own NextGen Gaming, but it also owns WMS and Barcrest, creators of slots like Rainbow Riches and Ruby Slippers. SG has a massive presence in the online and offline gambling industry and is involved with everything from slot machines to lottery products and sports betting software.

In that sense, it’s not unlike the massively popular and famous Playtech.

NextGen Gaming Slot Machines

NextGen Gaming slots cover many different themes, but like Yggdrasil Gaming and other top developers, they tend to lean more towards ancient history, myth, and recognisable images and characters.

For examples, just take a look at slots like Medusa II, A While on the Nile, Ramesses Riches, 5 Knights, Call of the Colosseum, King Arthur, Samurai Split, and many more.

There’s a “chicken or egg” situation going on here. Does ancient history and myth just happen to work really well with online casino slots, or is it because slots have been exploiting these themes for so long that they feel second-nature?

We’re not sure, but what matters is that these themes work well and are never too far away. There are many other great themes, as well, including animals, actors, and film licenses.

We have played at many top NextGen Gaming casinos over the years and have seen and played most of the brand’s top titles. What follows is a list of our favourite creations, as well as some of the most-played titles.

The Foxin’ Wins Series

Foxin’ Wins is arguably the most recognisable slot in the NextGen Gaming category. Every creator has a major slot or character, and these often propel them to new heights and give them the recognition that they deserve.

NetEnt has Gonzo’s Quest, Play’n GO has Rich Wilde, and for NextGen Gaming, it’s all about Mr. Fox. The first appearance of this iconic character was in Foxin’ Wins, a slot that takes place inside this anthropomorphic character’s palatial home and has numerous features to look out for.

Foxin’ Wins has a maximum win of 50.000x, a bet range that extends from 0.25 to 625, and 25 paylines. And if you like this slot, you’ll be happy to know that there are many other games featuring this stylish little creature.

Foxin’ Wins Again was the first sequel to make an appearance, but this was soon followed by the football-themed Foxin’ Wins Football Fever, the holiday-themed A Very Foxin’ Christmas, and the double-trouble Foxin’ Twins.

It’s fair to say that NextGen Gaming has found a theme and run with it, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. These games all look great and play well. More importantly, they are unique and the creator hasn’t simply changed a few colours, added some new images, and given it a new name.

An Evening with Holly Madison

In recent years, slot developers have upped the ante when it comes to endorsements and licensed creations. Not only are there more slots based on films and TV shows, but we’ve also seen an influx of titles themed around bands, musicians, actors, and presenters.

Most of these make perfect sense and we’re sure they have performed really well. For instance, some of our favourite slots are those based on rock and metal bands, including Guns ‘n Roses, Motorhead, and KISS. You can also play games based on Ozzy Osbourne and Jimi Hendrix.

So, where does NextGen Gaming come in? Well, it has signed a deal with Holly Madison and created a slot based on her.

If your reaction is, “Who?” then you’re not alone. It seems that Holly Madison is pretty big in the United States and is the star of a couple of TV shows, but neither of those have proven very popular in the United Kingdom, or in Europe on the whole.

That usually wouldn’t matter much as the US population of the United States is immense and more than enough to make these deals worthwhile. But online gambling is very tightly restricted across the pond, and as a result, NextGen Gaming does most of its business in Europe and Australia, where players just won’t be familiar.

Still, that’s not necessarily a problem. After all, who cares about the theme of the slot if it looks good and has some interesting features? Such is the case with An Evening with Holly Madison, a slot that will appeal to a wide number of players, even if they are not familiar with its star.

Medusa Megaways

The Medusa slot is themed around the famous Gorgon slain by Perseus. A snake-haired, stone-eyed creature from legend. The slot has an ancient Greek aesthetic and the addition of the Megaways feature means it contains over 100.000 possible paylines.

Like all Megaways titles, these are added at random. There are 6 reels in total and they are populated with symbols of varying sizes, which means it’s possible to have anywhere from 2 to half a dozen symbols on a single reel.

The more symbols there are, the more paylines there will be, which is where Megaways come in. If everything lands in your favour, you could get well over 100.000 paylines. Of course, that doesn’t guarantee success as the symbols still need to line-up, but it increases your chances of securing a big win.

Bobby 7s

Bobby 7s is a notable slot for several reasons, one of which is its massive betting range, which extends from a lot $0.25 to an impressive $5.000, equating to a maximum of $200 for each of its 25 paylines.

This colourful slot is based on the stereotypical English policeman, known as the “bobby”. It’s relatively basic, but it’s fun, nonetheless. It also includes a gamble feature, which is something we always like to see on modern slot machines.

This feature allows you to gamble some of your winnings, going double or nothing as you try to scoop an even bigger win. When we play online slots, we’re looking for the big wins and don’t really care about the small ones. We will happily throw away a 10x win if we have even a remote chance of winning 1.000x.

“Gamble” features are perfect for us and for players like us. It’s a simple card game where you bet your payline winnings on whether the next card will be higher or lower (50% chance) or what suit it will be (25% chance).

Call of the Colosseum

The Colosseum or Coliseum was the greatest stadium in antiquity, playing host to countless gladiator battles and other gruesome events. It gave blood-thirsty civilisations their fix of barbarism away from the battlefields and it has also been the subject of many famous slots.

NextGen Gaming’s Call of the Colosseum is one such title. It is a relatively simple slot that makes this grand building the focal point, with a Spartacus-like character (maybe even the revolt leader himself) assuming centre-stage.

300 Shields

With an RTP of more than 95%, 300 Shields is a simple but rewarding slot that explores elements of ancient warfare and is fully compatible with most mobile devices.

The “300 Shields” in question are owned by the famous Spartan warriors that stood strong against an insurmountable Persian army led by Xerxes I of Persia.

The battle of Thermopylae took place in 480 BC, around half a century before the start of the world-changing Peloponnesian war between Athens and Sparta, two city states that actually fought alongside one another at Thermopylae.

The Persians succeeded during this tough battle, but it is the valiant efforts of the Spartans soldiers that are best remembered today.

The Mask

The Mask is one of the few film-based slots in the NextGen catalogue, but it’s also one of the best. Based on the classic Jim Carrey film of the same name, it combines fun features with striking visuals and both images and sounds from the film.

The Mask was a pretty big deal at the time of its launch. It didn’t exactly launch Carrey’s career, but it cemented him as a leading man and turned him into a comic legend. The Mask slot takes players back to this simpler and more outlandish time, allowing them to explore one of the biggest films of the mid-90s.

James Dean

The James Dean online slot is an homage to the life and career of the eponymous actor. The star of Rebel Without a Cause, East of Eden, and Giant, was just 24 when he died but he received two posthumous Oscar nominations and has earned legendary status in Hollywood.

The James Dean slot by NextGen is a fun way to celebrate this former superstar. It has over 100.000 possible paylines and is 100% mobile compatible. There are also big payouts to collect and a bonus feature to unlock.

NextGen Gaming FAQ's

It depends on what that country is, but the answer is usually “yes”. If you reside in a region where online gambling is legal, and you play at casinos that work with a multitude of developers, there is a good chance you can find NextGen Gaming titles.

Just take a look at the casinos on this page and if you are able to join then you’re just a few seconds and some simple sign-up pages away from playing NextGen Gaming games.

Like all good software developers, NextGen Gaming thoroughly audits its games and ensures that all RNGs are functioning properly and are completely random.

Randomness equates to fairness, and this means that every spin, whether it’s on a Roulette wheel or a slot machine reel, is 100% safe and fair.

Not all iGaming developers can be trusted. In the past, there have been developers who either intentionally or unintentionally created unfair games, and some of these found their way onto major online casinos. However, they didn’t last long and this was before the incredibly strict rules and regulations that govern the industry today.

What’s more, when it comes to providers like SG, as well as creators as big as Microgaming and as small as Thunderkick, there are no concerns about fairness. Developers are out there to create a completely safe and fair experience, as this is how they make their money and keep their reputations strong.

As we often say, if you’re already going to win the game, it would be stupid, reckless, and careless to rig things just so you can win by a little more, especially when the consequences are losing your license and going out of business.
